It is important to
understand the various sizes, dimensions, and models
of pool tables available for purchase before making
a buying decision. Tables most commonly found in
pool halls and used in professional tournaments are
referred to as regulation, commercial, or
competition size tables. Another common term used to
describe this type of table is '9-foot' table,
making reference to the table dimension of 9 feet by
4 1/2 feet. Commercial tables also have smaller
pockets, '4 7/8 inches', and wider rails. This style
is recommended for the serious player geared toward
competition and tournament play.
A home table, or also
referred to as pub sized, or bar sized, measures 8
feet by 4 feet with pockets slightly larger
generally at 5 1/8 inches for most home tables.
Though the size makes this style pool table ideal
for casual home games, they are also popular for
allowed league games and tournaments.
It is strongly
recommended that you select a pool table size that
compliments the table style at the pool hall or pub
where you will most often compete, whether for
tournament games or recreation. Consistency in this
fashion will help improve your overall game and make
for a much more enjoyable playing experience.
When considering to
buy a pool table for your home, we cannot put enough
emphasis on playing area space. There is nothing
more frustrating than trying to land a shot when the
butt end of a pool cue is hitting the wall behind
you, or you do not have the room to execute a proper
stance. As a rule of thumb, you must consider enough
space for the pool table itself and an additional 5
feet on each side.
