Pool Table Supplies | Tools Of The Trade

Having the proper supplies at the pool table is essential in creating a fair and pleasurable gaming experience. Over the years the tools used to assist a player in achieving pool greatness have not changed much at all. New materials and methods of manufacturing pool tables, balls, cue sticks, and other supplies have added to game accuracy and accessory durability, but the general construction of these tools remain the same.

Pool Chalk is an essential tool used to create friction between the cue ball and the cue tip. Without proper chalking of the cue tip, the pool cue may slide off the slippery surface of the cue ball and cause for a loss in position of an otherwise accurate aim. This loss in position is also referred to as 'miscuing'. A slight coating of chalk should be applied to the cue stick before every shot.

If the palms of your hands begin to perspire, you will have a difficult experience trying to control your pool cue with the bridge of your fingers. Most pool halls provide a type of powder or chalk to absorb the perspiration allowing your cue to move freely without resistance. Apply a thin coat to your hands, and clap the excess off into the air. Do not apply too much or you may leave clusters of powder on the table cloth after your next shot. Ordinary baby powder is an ideal household solution to this problem.

The pool ball rack or triangle is a necessary element of your pool table supplies and is manufactured of wood, plastic, or acrylic. For a standard game of 8-ball the triangle is used to position the 15 balls in a triangle or pyramid shape starting at the foot of the table. To achieve a 'tight rack' start at the wide end of the triangle and push the back row of pool balls forward using your fingers while holding the rack steady with your thumbs. Force them forward to remove any slack and carefully lift the triangle. Different types of pool ball racks are used for different pool and billiard games. This is discussed further in the Pool Table Games section.
