Slate is the ideal
playing surface on any pool table regardless of
brand or size. Slate is a type of rock that can be
easily formed, polished, and manufactured to fit the
design of any pool or billiard game table, but what
makes this the ideal surface is it's resistance to
warping caused by humidity and temperature changes.
It is not
recommended to purchase any non-slate table as
alternative materials are known to distort and warp
thus rendering your table blemished and forcing you
to invest on repair. Materials such as Slatron and
Permaslate are synthetic materials made of plastic,
easily prone to distortion. Honeycomb and Fiberboard
are used in some economy class pool tables and
should be avoided if at all possible.
Typically, the slate
used on most pool tables is approximately 3/4" to 1"
thick ad weighs between 350-650 pounds. Because of
the size and weight of the slate, you will normally
find that the slab of rock is divided into three
individual pieces and then placed on the pool table
foundation during assembly.
If you are
purchasing a used pool table take extra precaution
while transporting the pool table. More than likely
you will need to disassemble the slate rock and
reassemble once again at your home. All of your
efforts will be wasted if you do not have a
perfectly flat slate surface on your table free of
cracks and gaps. It is recommended that you consult
a professional pool table installation company to
assemble your table whether you purchase it new or
used.
