A standard set of Pool
or Billiard Balls contain 15 balls numbered 1
through 15, and an all white cue ball. The even
numbered balls are solid in color, and the odd
numbered balls are striped. Certain games such as
snooker, and three cushion billiards use a variation
of solid colored balls but for this purpose we will
only be discussing the set of pool table balls used to
play 8-Ball and 9-Ball games.
The pool ball has experienced an evolution over the
past centuries, at one time having been made of pure
clay, then ivory, and most recently plastic or
resin. Regulation size balls are 2 1/4 inches in
diameter and weigh 5 1/2 to 6 ounces. The same size
ball is also used on home or pub sized tables of 8'
x 4' dimensions.
Pool Table Balls
found in pool halls are generally kept in good
condition. Many establishments use professional ball
cleaning machines to maintain a ball's integrity,
but that option is neither practical nor economical
for home use.
It is recommended
that you wash and polish your set of billiard balls
once about every two weeks for maximum life. There
are special polishes and waxes available on the
market for such a purpose, or you can use common
household items to keep the balls in good shape.
Simply wash with soap and water, and when dry, apply
a thin coat of plastic polish or car wax. Buff the
excess polish out with a clean cloth, and you have
succeeded in extending the life of your equipment.
